Because collagen and elastin keep the skin supple and resilient, allowing it to stretch and contract, when collagen gets broken down, skin tends to sag and wrinkle. Fortunately, you can do a great deal to preserve the health of your midlife skin and even heal some of the damage that has been done. Understanding the anatomy of the skin is the first step in understanding what you can do to keep it looking its best. The skin has three layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the innermost fat layer. The epidermis is where new skin cells are produced. This layer also contains the cells known as melanocytes that produce melanin—the pigment that determines the color of the skin. The dermis lies underneath the epidermis and makes up about 9. This is the area that contains the nerves which sense pressure, temperature, and pain, and also sweat glands, hair follicles, sebaceous glands which produce oil, and also blood vessels. The sweat and sebaceous glands secrete a thin layer of perspiration and oil that forms a protective acid mantle on the skin. The dermis also contains the skin’s collagen layer, a dense meshwork of fibers that give the skin elasticity and strength. Beneath the dermis and epidermis lies the fat layer, which serves to insulate and protect our inner organs and acts as a sort of cushion that helps keep our skin plump. Together these three layers form what constitutes the boundary between ourselves as individuals and the remainder of our world. We can therefore see how important it is to care for this very special “barrier” organ—with not just topical efforts and applications, but from the inside out, by eating healthy foods and drinking clean water, getting adequate exercise and rest, and by cultivating the light of our inner spirit. Listen to Your Body. Some women notice that their skin gets drier, begins to sag and appear crepey. Some women notice more wrinkles and spots. Growths may also appear. And in addition, following an injury our skin may heal more slowly than it did in our youth. What Causes This. A number of factors contribute to skin aging, including poor diet, ingestion of toxins, and declining “anti- aging” hormones. But scientists now think that free- radical damage may be one of the primary causes of aging, including premature wrinkling of the skin and age- related diseases such as heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and arthritis. In short, free radicals are oxygen molecules that have lost an electron through interaction with other molecules. The resulting oxygen molecules are very unstable and reactive. In order to restore their missing electron, they steal them from other “healthy” molecules, thus creating more free radicals and in the process, damaging cells. The result in the body is like rust on steel. The collagen layer of our skin is especially susceptible to free radical damage that arises from sun and pollution exposure, resulting in a process known as cross- linking. Cross- linking of the naturally supple collagen molecules makes them become stiff and inflexible, eventually resulting in skin that looks and feels “old and leathery.” Free radicals that are produced when the sun hits the skin activate molecules known as transcription factors, which signal cellular DNA to produce proteins that are pro- inflammatory and harmful to the cell. This same process also produces collagen- digesting enzymes that can leave tiny defects in the skin which give rise over time to wrinkles. The American Academy of Dermatology now attributes 9. If you do not believe this, just examine the skin on your buttocks and lower back. You will notice something very important: It is very smooth and wrinkle- free! The reason for this is because this skin is generally protected from ultraviolet rays from the sun for most of your life. Skin that is chronically overexposed to the sun is in a constant state of inflammation. While this mild inflammation of a suntan plumps up the skin temporarily and gives it a youthful appearance, once the tan goes away, wrinkles appear. And any tissue inflammation begins the metabolic cascade that eventually causes degenerative changes. Cigarette smoking also produces free radicals and is another of the skin’s worst enemies. The ill effects of smoking become very obvious at mid- life. Past studies have shown that the skin of smokers ages twice as fast after the age of 3. Women who smoke often have a paler skin tone, darker circles under their eyes, more crepeyness and premature wrinkling, especially around their eyes and mouth, than non- smokers. Some of this is due to the decrease in circulation to the skin caused by nicotine. When circulation decreases, fewer nutrients can get to the skin and the skin is less able to release toxins produced by cell metabolism. This results in slow skin growth and rejuvenation. Smoking also dehydrates the skin and depletes it of vitamins A, E, C and B–complex, and the minerals calcium, potassium and zinc. In addition, smoking directly poisons the ovaries. This leads to decreased levels of estrogen, which is necessary to help maintain elastin and collagen fibers. Healing Alternatives. Some scientists now believe that topical treatment with vitamin A creams, such as Retin- A and Renova, can have some effect on the rebuilding of collagen. However, these products can be very irritating to some skin types and can result in excessive flakiness on the cheeks and jaw line.
Women who use Retin- A or Renova on the fine lines around the eyes have reported some improvement. However, many note that the improvement generally disappears when they stop using the cream. It could be that the slight irritation of the Retin–A or Renova causes the lines to appear less visible. When the inflammation subsides after discontinuing the product, they are left with little improvement over where they started. It is always best to avoid skin irritation whenever possible. Spiritual and Holistic Options. In addition to such things as getting enough sleep, drinking lots of water, reducing stress, and avoiding alcohol, cigarettes, and other drugs, there are several specific steps you can take to minimize the effects of aging on your skin. They have helped eradicate many communicable diseases and saved countless lives. But antibiotics have also brought with them a number of unforeseen problems and health risks. Before we go any further, I want to say that I’m not anti- doctor nor against traditional medicine, but each has its time and a place. For numerous reasons, many people are turning to herbal alternatives to antibiotics for treating SIBO. If you missed the last parts of the series, catch up here: What is an Antibiotic? According to Medicine. Net. com, an antibiotic is: A drug used to treat bacterial infections. Originally, an antibiotic was a substance produced by one microorganism that selectively inhibits the growth of another. Synthetic antibiotics, usually chemically related to natural antibiotics, have since been produced that accomplish comparable tasks. As humans, we have been using natural antibiotics for centuries, even before we knew what bacteria was. For example, garlic has been used since at least 2. BC for its healing properties. So why would you choose herbal antibiotic alternatives over these? There are three main reasons: Antibiotic resistance. Fewer potential side effects. Herbal antibiotics may be more effective. Herbal alternatives to antibiotics work on multiple levels in the body, so resistance is less likely to occur. Each of these has some pretty nasty potential side effects. With herbal antibiotic alternativess, there is still a risk of side effects. However, the side effects generally aren’t going to be as severe as with prescription antibiotics. One point worth mentioning is that even herbal antibiotics can kill off good bacteria. So, even you use herbal treatments instead of prescription antibiotics, you still must make diet and lifestyle changes to help restore gut dysbiosis. How about the fact that herbs may be more effective in treating SIBO than prescription antibiotics! Now, bear in mind that there have been really few studies on pharmaceutical antibiotics for SIBO. There have been even fewer for herbal treatments for SIBO. And one of these studies was on just one person! However, the lack of research doesn’t mean that herbal alternatives to antibiotics aren’t a good solution. In the larger study, which was published in the journal Global Advances in Health and Medicine. They took 1. 04 people who had been diagnosed with SIBO through lactulose breath testing. Of these, 3. 7 of the patients were treated with herbal alternatives to antibiotics and the remaining were given Rifaximin. What Makes Herbal Alternatives to Antibiotics So Effective? Why would a natural substance be more effective than the prescription drugs which scientists worked for years to develop? The book Herbal Antibiotics by Stephan Harrod Buhner describes it well. He talks about how pharmaceutical antibiotics are isolated chemicals – meaning they are one chemical. Because they are only one thing, it is easier for bacteria to adapt to them and develop a resistance. By contrast, herbs are made up of many compounds. For example, garlic (which is one of the best known natural antibiotics) contains dozens of compounds. All of these compounds work together and can attack bacteria on multiple levels. It is much harder for bacteria to adapt to herbal treatments because of how complex the herbs’ structures are. Even the individual compounds in herbs can work in complex ways. Allicin, which is one of the main antibacterial compounds found in garlic, is a particularly good example of the complexity of herbal treatments. Interestingly, allicin isn’t present in undamaged garlic. But, when the garlic becomes damaged, a chemical reaction occurs and allicin is produced to protect the plant from disease and other damage (that is why garlic becomes pungent once you cut it open). Once in the body, allicin undergoes a redox- reaction with proteins, which is thought to be the source of its biological activity. Plants don’t have the ability to move, so they’ve had to come up with other ways of protecting themselves. They’ve evolved chemical structures to protect themselves – like how poison ivy will make you itch or kale tastes bitter so animals won’t want to eat it. These mechanisms have been perfected in millions of years of evolution (definitely longer than we’ve been creating chemicals in labs!). With a bit of research, we could utilize these natural plant compounds for our own benefit. Consider the fact that about 4. About 2. 5% of these come from the rainforest, and we’ve only tested fewer than 1% of all the tropical trees and plants in the rainforest! The bottom line? Plants are pretty amazing and their healing powers shouldn’t be underestimated. Which Herbal Antibiotic Alternatives Can Treat SIBO? Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much research into herbal alternatives to antibiotics, and even less research about herbal treatments specifically for SIBO (it seems that drug companies would rather fund research for expensive chemical pharmaceuticals than cheap, natural remedies!). While there is some evidence that these substances may have medicinal benefits against infections, it does not necessarily mean that they will work for you. To gain muscle you need more calories, and to lose fat you need less calories. Trying to do both at the same time would be like trying to sit and stand at the same time. It just can’t literally be done simultaneously. This is why most of the people who try to do both at the same time will usually fail to do either and eventually give up. And this of course brings up the next important question? How Can I Do Both? After hearing this, the next thing everyone always wants to know is how do you actually reach both goals (gain muscle AND lose fat) if you can’t do both at the same time? Well, it’s pretty simple. You DON’T do them at the same time. Instead, you set them up in phases and alternate between them. People often incorrectly take this to mean eating as much as possible and trying to pack on weight as quickly as possible. This is dead wrong. Instead, the true goal of a muscle gain phase is to build as much quality lean mass as you can while at the same time keeping fat gains to an absolute minimum. Basically, the goal is to gain muscle without gaining excess fat. To do this, your daily calorie intake is increased so that weight is gained at an ideal rate of no more than 0. Weight Gain Diet). As far as weight training goes, the goal in this phase is using an intelligently designed muscle building routine and working your ass off to make as much progress as you can and get stronger on every exercise. To lose body fat and maintain muscle at the same time – and to stay strong – you need to do the right kind of exercise and follow the right kind of diet. Carbs would then be used to make up the difference (more carbs to create more calories, less carbs to create less calories). Your workout routine would also stay pretty much the same. Whether you’re in the phase where you’re trying to gain muscle or lose fat, there is no significant difference in what works best when it comes to weight training. Therefore, no big changes need to be made at all. Just try to get stronger and progress as often as possible in the muscle gaining phase, and then try to maintain all of that strength as best as you can during the fat loss phase. Pick A Phase And Then Alternate. Now that you understand the basics of how your diet and workout routine need to be set up when you want to both gain muscle and lose fat, the next thing you need to figure out is which phase to start with first. Here’s how I usually answer that question. Trying to do a successful muscle gaining phase when you’re in an already fat state is just a recipe for disaster. Definitely get leaner first. From there, you basically just need to give that first phase enough time to actually work. When it does, just switch on over to the other phase for a while and give it time to work as well. Depending on how much fat you have to lose and how much muscle you want to gain, you’d just keep on alternating from phase to phase until you have the body you want. In the end, you won’t actually be doing both at the same time, but both goals will end up being achieved successfully just the same. Now for the last question you probably have. But such diets limit your nutritional intake, can be unhealthy, and tend to fail in the long run. The key to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight isn't about short- term dietary changes.
